What a Wegovy pen price actually includes

The headline number on a pharmacy page is rarely the whole story, and this is where two pharmacies that look close on the page can end up well apart at checkout. At verified UK online pharmacies the pen price normally covers:

• The medicine. One Wegovy FlexTouch pen containing four weekly doses for 0.25mg to 2.4mg. The 7.2mg dose is different: it comes as four single use pens, one per week, which is part of why it costs more. See the 7.2mg single use pen explainer.
• The prescriber consultation. The online questionnaire and clinical review is bundled at almost every provider. A separate consultation fee is now unusual and should be treated as part of the real price if it exists.
• Needles. Usually included for the four doses. Some providers include a sharps bin, others charge or send one on request.

What is often not included, and needs adding before you compare:

• Subscription terms. A lower monthly price sometimes depends on a rolling subscription. That is fine if you plan to stay, but check the cancellation terms before treating it as the cheapest option.

How much Wegovy costs for a year

A year is 52 weeks, which is 13 pens. On the standard plan you spend one pen each on 0.25mg, 0.5mg, 1mg and 1.7mg (16 weeks), then nine pens on 2.4mg for the remaining 36 weeks. Work it out from the live cards above:

Because the maintenance dose is nine of the thirteen pens in year one and all thirteen after that, the 2.4mg price is the one that decides what a year costs, and the gap between a cheap pharmacy and an expensive one over a year runs to hundreds of pounds for an identical medicine. If your prescriber moves you to 7.2mg, the yearly figure rises by thirteen times the gap between the 7.2mg and 2.4mg pens. Wegovy cost on the NHS

If you are prescribed Wegovy on the NHS you pay the standard prescription charge, not the price of the medicine. In England that is £9.90 per item for 2026/27, with prepayment certificates at £32.05 for three months and £114.50 for twelve months. Prescriptions are free in Scotland, Wales and Northern Ireland.

The catch is eligibility. NICE technology appraisal TA875 recommends semaglutide (Wegovy) for adults with at least one weight related condition and a BMI of 35 or more (or 30 to 34.9 where the person meets the criteria for referral to specialist weight management), with lower thresholds for some ethnic groups, prescribed within a specialist weight management service and for a maximum of two years. NICE has also recommended Wegovy for reducing cardiovascular risk in eligible adults, which widens who can be considered. In practice, waiting lists and the two year limit mean the large majority of people using Wegovy in the UK buy it privately, which is why the private prices on this page matter.

Why the same pen costs more at one pharmacy than another

Novo Nordisk supplies every pharmacy with the same product. The variation is entirely on the pharmacy side, and it comes from a handful of things:

• Margin and scale. Large brands with big marketing budgets tend to sit in the middle or upper part of the market. Smaller GPhC registered online pharmacies often undercut them because price is the only way they can compete for the same search.
• What is bundled. A pharmacy that includes delivery, needles and follow up in one figure can look dearer on the page and be cheaper at checkout.
• Subscription versus one off. Subscription pricing is usually lower per month in exchange for a commitment.

This is also why the pharmacies that rank first on Google for a Wegovy price search are rarely the cheapest. Has the Wegovy price gone up in the UK?

Private Wegovy prices in the UK move with competition between pharmacies rather than with a single manufacturer list price, so they drift down as more providers enter the market and drift up when supply tightens. Two events have shaped the market: the launch of the 7.2mg single use pens, which added a top dose that costs more than 2.4mg at every provider, and the manufacturer price rise on Mounjaro in September 2025, which pushed some buyers towards Wegovy and changed how pharmacies price both medicines against each other. How to pay less for Wegovy without cutting corners

1. Compare the delivered price for your dose, not the starter price. Pharmacies advertise 0.25mg because it is the cheapest pen; you will spend most of the year on 2.4mg. Check that card first.
2. Check the retail price next to the discount. If a code only brings a pharmacy back down to what another charges every day, it is not a saving.
3. Use first order codes once, then reassess. Genuine new customer codes exist and are listed on the pharmacy discount codes hub; switching after month one is straightforward and explained in the switching pharmacy guide.
4. Look at two and three pen bundles once you are stable on a dose, and only if the pharmacy's maintenance policy suits you.
