Do pharmacies inform my GP?

One of the most asked questions before a first online order. Here is how UK providers handle GP notification for Wegovy, what the consent question at consultation means, and why prescribers encourage sharing.

Last checked 3 Nov 2026

Short answer: most UK online pharmacies will not contact your GP without your consent. They ask during the consultation. Some providers require consent as prescribing policy. Prescribers encourage informing your GP so your NHS record stays complete and future care stays safe, and you can always tell your GP yourself instead.

What happens at consultation

During the online consultation most providers present a GP notification question: consent for the provider to write to your practice about the treatment, or a declaration that you will inform your GP yourself. Practice varies. Some pharmacies treat notification as optional, others make consent a condition of supply because their prescriber requires a complete shared record. If it matters to you, check the provider's policy before paying. You will usually find it stated in the consultation flow or FAQ.

Why sharing is encouraged

  • Interaction safety: your GP and any hospital team prescribe against your NHS record. A treatment missing from that record can lead to unsafe combinations.
  • Continuity: blood tests, pregnancy planning, surgery and new diagnoses all interact with weight loss treatment decisions.
  • Better reviews: a GP who knows about the treatment can factor it into monitoring rather than discovering it mid consultation.

If you value privacy

Declining GP notification does not make treatment invisible: the provider keeps its own clinical records under UK data protection law, and dispensing generates normal pharmacy records. If discretion is the concern, the practical wins are around delivery and day to day privacy rather than record keeping. The medication privacy advice tool on iGovy covers discreet delivery, packaging and household privacy in detail. When comparing providers on the price comparison, remember notification policy is a legitimate thing to check alongside price.

Independence note: iGovy is a price information website and does not sell, prescribe or dispense medicines. Notification policies belong to each provider. This page describes common UK practice, not a rule for every pharmacy.

GP notification questions

Will an online pharmacy automatically tell my GP?

Usually not without your consent. Most UK online providers ask during the consultation whether you consent to your GP being informed. Practice varies by provider, and prescribers generally encourage sharing so your medical record stays complete.

Why do prescribers encourage informing your GP?

So your NHS record reflects the treatment. That matters for drug interactions, future prescriptions, blood tests, pregnancy planning and any hospital care. An incomplete record can lead to unsafe prescribing elsewhere.

Can I decline GP notification?

Many providers let you decline, though some require consent as part of their prescribing policy and a prescriber can decline to supply without it. Whatever you choose, you can always tell your GP yourself at any appointment.

Does declining keep the treatment private?

The provider still keeps its own clinical records under UK data protection law, and privacy from your GP is not the same as privacy generally. For discreet delivery and privacy practicalities see the iGovy medication privacy advice page.
