Wegovy hair loss: why it happens, whether it grows back and the 7.2 mg note
Hair loss is a common Wegovy side effect and one of the most upsetting, because it tends to arrive a few months in, just as the weight loss is going well. The reassuring part is that it is almost always the temporary shedding that follows any rapid weight loss, and it recovers. The June 2026 leaflet adds one new detail: hair loss may be more frequent on the 7.2 mg dose. This guide explains the mechanism, the timeline, what helps, and when shedding needs a GP rather than patience.
Hair loss: commonMay be more frequent at 7.2 mgChecked 20 October 2026Author: Nick Johnson
Key facts
- Hair loss is a common Wegovy side effect: up to 1 in 10 people. In the weight management trials it was reported by roughly 3% of people on semaglutide against 1% on placebo.
- The June 2026 leaflet notes it may occur more frequently with the 7.2 mg dose.
- The usual type is telogen effluvium: diffuse shedding that starts two to four months after a stressor (here, rapid weight loss and reduced intake) and recovers over the following months.
- It is not the patterned, permanent loss of male or female pattern baldness, and it does not usually cause bald patches.
- Protein, iron, and not crash dieting on top of the medicine are the modifiable factors.
- Patchy loss, scalp soreness or scaling, or shedding that continues beyond six months warrants a GP review to check for other causes such as low iron or thyroid problems.
Why weight loss makes hair fall out
Hair grows in cycles. At any time most follicles are in a growth phase and around a tenth are resting before the hair sheds. A significant stress on the body, and rapid weight loss counts, pushes a larger share of follicles into the resting phase at once. Two to four months later those hairs shed together, which is the diffuse thinning people notice on the brush and in the shower. Because it lags the trigger, it often arrives when the weight loss is well established, which can make it feel like the medicine has suddenly turned on you.
Reduced intake makes it worse. Hair is not a priority tissue, so when protein, iron, zinc or overall calories fall, the body diverts resources elsewhere. People eating well below their needs on top of the appetite suppression see more shedding. The same effect is seen after bariatric surgery and very low calorie diets, which is why dietitians in those settings push protein hard.
Whether semaglutide has any direct effect on follicles is not established. The trial excess over placebo is small and consistent with the amount of weight lost. The 7.2 mg note in the leaflet fits that picture, since the higher dose produces greater loss.
What the timeline usually looks like
| Stage | What is happening |
|---|---|
| Months 1 to 3 | Weight loss underway; follicles shifting to rest. No visible change yet. |
| Months 3 to 6 | Shedding noticed: more hair on the brush, in the plughole, thinner ponytail. Usually diffuse, not patchy. |
| Months 6 to 9 | Shedding slows as weight stabilises and intake improves. Fine regrowth appears at the hairline and parting. |
| Months 9 to 12 and beyond | Density recovers. Total recovery can take up to a year from the start of shedding. |
Individual timelines vary and a second, smaller round of shedding after a later dose step or a further period of fast loss is possible.
What helps
Protein at every meal
Hair is made of protein. With a suppressed appetite it is easy to fall well short. Eggs, dairy, fish, poultry, beans, lentils and tofu; aim to include a protein source in each of your small meals rather than trying to make it up in one.
Do not stack a crash diet on the medicine
Very low calorie eating on top of Wegovy accelerates loss and shedding together. Steady loss is kinder to hair, and the weight comes off anyway.
Check iron and other basics
Low iron stores are a common, fixable contributor, especially in women who menstruate. A GP can check ferritin, thyroid function and vitamin D if shedding is marked. Do not start high-dose supplements blind. Some are harmful in excess.
Be gentle
Avoid tight styles, high heat and harsh chemical treatments while shedding is active. They do not cause telogen effluvium but they add breakage on top of it.
Give it time
Telogen effluvium recovers on its own once the trigger settles. Products marketed for regrowth cannot speed up a cycle that is already recovering, and there is no evidence that supplements help people who are not deficient.
Talk to your prescriber
If shedding is distressing and you are on 7.2 mg, it is reasonable to discuss whether 2.4 mg is the right maintenance dose for you. Do not change the dose yourself.
When to see a GP
- Hair coming out in distinct patches rather than evenly.
- Scalp itching, scaling, redness or soreness.
- Shedding that continues at the same rate beyond six months, or starts again after recovery without a new trigger.
- Other symptoms alongside it: fatigue, feeling cold, heavy periods, brittle nails, which can point to iron or thyroid problems.
- Eyebrow or body hair loss as well as scalp hair.
Any of those suggests something other than weight loss shedding and deserves its own assessment.

How this guide was checked: the frequency band and the 7.2 mg note were compared with section 4 of the Wegovy FlexTouch patient leaflet revised June 2026 and section 4.8 of the Summary of Product Characteristics on the eMC. The description of telogen effluvium follows the British Association of Dermatologists patient leaflet and NHS guidance. Trial figures are from the SmPC, never from pharmacy marketing. The page is re-checked whenever the eMC record changes or the MHRA issues a Drug Safety Update, and at least every three months.
