Switching pharmacy on Wegovy: your dose, your proof and your timing

You are free to change pharmacy at any point in Wegovy treatment. This guide covers the dose you leave with, the proof a new pharmacy asks for and the week to place your order so no injection day goes by without a pen.

Written by Nick Johnson, Independent Prescription Pricing Analyst, Medstack Ltd. Guide reviewed . Last checked 1 Nov 2026

Short answer: you do not start again at 0.25 mg. Show the new pharmacy proof of your current Wegovy dose and the date of your last injection. With no missed doses you ask for the same dose or the next dose up. The request is yours to make. The new prescriber checks your record and writes the prescription. Missed doses change the answer, and the table further down sets out how.

Key facts

  • No restart. A new pharmacy continues your treatment. Your weeks at the old pharmacy count.
  • Your dose request: the same dose, or the next one up after four weeks on your current dose.
  • Dose order: 0.25 mg, 0.5 mg, 1 mg, 1.7 mg, 2.4 mg, then 7.2 mg for some adults. No step gets skipped.
  • Missed doses: one missed week rarely changes your dose. Two or more may mean a lower restart.
  • Proof: a dated dispensing label, photo ID and a weight check.
  • Timing: start the switch with two weekly doses left.
  • Who decides: the new prescriber. iGovy does not sell, prescribe or dispense medicines.

Your dose when you swap pharmacy: start again, stay or move up?

Wegovy has one licensed dose schedule in the UK and every pharmacy prescribes from the same one. Your place on the schedule belongs to you and travels with you. A new pharmacy has no clinical reason to send you back to 0.25 mg when your record shows steady weekly injections. You have four possible requests.

Most pharmacies will ask whether you want to step up. The consultation form usually puts the question to you directly, so the choice is generally yours. Ask to hold at your current strength and most prescribers will agree, as long as holding is clinically sensible. Switching pharmacy does not force a dose increase, and you do not have to accept one to be approved.

  • Stay on the same dose. The easiest request to approve. Proof of your current strength and a recent injection date is normally enough. The product information names 2.4 mg as the maintenance dose, so a prescriber may ask why you want to hold a lower one. Side effects and steady weight loss are both fair reasons to give.
  • Move up one dose. The schedule sets four weeks on each of 0.25 mg, 0.5 mg, 1 mg and 1.7 mg. Weeks injected under your old pharmacy count towards the four. A pen holds four weekly doses, so one finished pen at your current strength usually means you have met the minimum.
  • No skipped steps. Nobody moves from 0.5 mg to 1.7 mg, at an old pharmacy or a new one. Each step lets your stomach adjust before the next. A prescriber who sees a jump in your history will query the request.
  • Move down. You may ask for the previous dose if side effects are hard to live with. The product information supports this, and a new consultation is a good moment to raise the subject.
“In case of significant gastrointestinal symptoms, consider delaying dose escalation or lowering to the previous dose until symptoms have improved.”Wegovy Summary of Product Characteristics, section 4.2, Novo Nordisk Limited (emc, updated 22 September 2026)

The 7.2 mg dose has extra conditions. The product information allows the increase “if needed” for weight management in adults with obesity, after a minimum of four weeks on 2.4 mg. For ages 12 to 17 the product information does not recommend doses above 2.4 mg. The 7.2 mg dose comes as one 7.2 mg injection or as three 2.4 mg injections given one after another, depending on the pen. Ask the new pharmacy which pen you will receive, because the price differs. The 7.2 mg pen guide explains the two formats.

Missed doses change the answer

Your body adjusts to semaglutide step by step, and some of the adjustment fades during a gap. For this reason a prescriber asks for the date of your last injection before agreeing a dose. The UK product information gives a firm rule for one missed dose and a looser instruction for several.

The UK text stops there. No UK source gives a set number of missed weeks for a set restart dose on Wegovy. One published paper offers numbers for a different use of the same medicine. Whitley, Trujillo and Neumiller wrote a special report in Clinical Diabetes in 2023 during a United States shortage. For weekly semaglutide at the 1 mg diabetes dose, the authors suggest the same dose after up to two missed doses, 0.5 mg after three or four, and 0.25 mg after five or more. This is expert opinion from the United States, written for diabetes doses and never for Wegovy strengths. A UK prescriber may weigh the paper and is not bound by any of the figures.

More detail sits in the Wegovy missed dose guide and in restarting Wegovy after a break.

What to tell the new prescriber

Six facts settle most dose decisions on the first reply. Put all six in the consultation form or the first message.

  • Your current dose in mg, as printed on the pen and the label.
  • The date of your last injection.
  • How many weeks you have injected this dose, with the date you began on this strength.
  • Any missed doses, with the true dates. A gap you hide puts you at risk of a dose your body is no longer used to.
  • Side effects on this dose and on earlier ones, including any still going on.
  • The dose you want: the same, the next one up, or one lower.

Ask for the dose decision before you pay. Then compare the price of the dose you will be on, not the price of the starter dose. The live table lists every pharmacy iGovy checks, with discount prices and delivery included.

How to switch pharmacy on Wegovy, step by step

  1. Start with two doses leftBegin after your second injection from the current pen. You then have two weeks in hand.
  2. Compare the dose you will be onCheck live prices for your expected strength on the Wegovy price comparison UK table. Look up the pharmacy on the GPhC register and read how iGovy does its own GPhC verification.
  3. Check the pharmacy accepts transfers at your BMIYour BMI today may be lower than on the day you began. Some pharmacies set a higher BMI for new patients than for people already on treatment. The Wegovy maintenance pharmacies directory lists the switching BMI each pharmacy has confirmed.
  4. Gather your proofPhotograph the dispensing label on your latest box. Have photo ID and your GP details to hand.
  5. Complete the consultationGive the six facts above. Answer every question as things stand today.
  6. Get the dose decision before you payAsk which strength the prescriber will issue. Where the answer is lower than you expected, ask for the reason in writing.
  7. Book delivery ahead of injection dayPick a delivery day at least two days before your next injection is due. Wegovy travels chilled, so choose a day when someone is in.
  8. Close the old orderCancel any repeat order or subscription with the old pharmacy once the new pen is in your fridge.

Proof a new pharmacy asks for

Online pharmacies in Great Britain follow guidance from the General Pharmaceutical Council (GPhC), updated in February 2025. The guidance explains most of the checks you meet during a switch.

  • Identity. Pharmacies must check you are who you say you are, with a check suited to the medicine. Expect a photo ID upload or an electronic check. No passport or driving licence? Read Wegovy ID checks without a passport.
  • Weight, height or BMI, checked independently. For weight management medicines the prescriber must verify your figures another way. The guidance lists a video consultation, an in person check, your clinical records, or contact with another healthcare provider such as your GP. A phone call alone does not count. Many pharmacies ask for a dated full length photo or a video of you on the scales as part of this check.
  • More than a questionnaire. The guidance says a prescriber does not base a decision on a questionnaire alone. Expect follow up questions.
  • Your current treatment. A photo of the dispensing label with your name, the strength and the dispensing date. An order confirmation or a message from the old prescriber backs this up.
  • Your GP. The guidance expects the prescriber to ask for your GP details and your consent to share information. Without consent the prescriber has to decide whether prescribing is still safe. See do pharmacies inform my GP.

Your label is the strongest single item. Keep the box from each pen until the next one arrives.

Timing the switch so no weekly dose is missed

Wegovy is a weekly injection, so the switch runs on a simple count of doses left in the pen.

A switching timeline built around one four dose pen
Doses left in your penWhat to do
3 doses leftCompare prices and pick a pharmacy. Check its switching BMI.
2 doses leftSend the consultation, your label photo and your ID. Ask for the dose decision.
1 dose leftPay and book delivery. Aim for arrival at least two days before the following injection day.
0 doses leftThe new pen is in the fridge. Cancel the old repeat order.

On a phone, swipe the table sideways to see every column.

Two rules in the product information give you room when a parcel runs late. A missed dose may still be taken up to 5 days after the due day. Your injection day may also change, as long as at least 3 days pass between two doses. A pen arriving four days late therefore costs you nothing: inject on arrival, then return to your usual day the week after. A pen arriving six days late means one skipped dose. Tell the prescriber if this happens before your next order.

Delivery times differ between pharmacies. The pharmacy delivery speed page compares them, and the storage and fridge guide covers the pen once delivered.

Problems and fixes

  • The new pharmacy offers a lower dose than you asked for. Ask which part of your record led to the decision. Missing proof is the usual cause. Send the label photo and ask for a second look. A different pharmacy may reach a different view, and you have not paid yet.
  • You have no label or box. Ask the old pharmacy for your order history or a dispensing record. You have a legal right to a copy of the personal data a company holds on you, and the Information Commissioner's Office explains how to ask.
  • Your BMI is now below the new pharmacy's limit. Limits for people already on treatment vary. Use the maintenance pharmacies directory and the maintenance price list to find pharmacies with a lower confirmed figure.
  • Your strength is out of stock. Do not change dose on your own to match what is on the shelf. Ask the prescriber, or check stock at another pharmacy on the comparison table.
  • The old pharmacy keeps charging you. Cancel the subscription in your account and by email, and keep the confirmation.
  • You have pens from both pharmacies. Tell the new prescriber. Use one supply at a time, and never inject more than one dose in a week.
  • You feel unwell after a dose change. Contact the prescribing pharmacy. For severe or lasting stomach pain, repeated vomiting or signs of dehydration, call NHS 111, or 999 in an emergency. The Wegovy side effects body map lists the warning signs.

What switching costs

Pharmacies do not charge a fee for the move. You pay the new pharmacy for the pen, and some add a consultation or delivery charge. Four points decide whether the move saves money.

  • The dose sets the price. Higher strengths cost more at most pharmacies. A step up during the switch changes the comparison, so price the dose the prescriber agreed.
  • First order prices end. Many pharmacies charge new customers less for a first order. Check the repeat price as well, because you pay the repeat price every month after.
  • Codes. The pharmacy discount codes hub lists the codes iGovy holds. Some pharmacies also match a lower published price, as the price match guide explains.
  • Delivery is part of the price. The iGovy tables show totals with delivery included.

We do not advise long term commitments. A 3, 6 or 12 month plan ties you to one pharmacy at one price. Our guide to Wegovy subscription plans sets out the drawbacks.

Switching pharmacy on Wegovy: questions

Should I take a 3 month or 6 month Wegovy plan?

We do not advise long term commitments. A 3, 6 or 12 month plan ties you to one pharmacy at one price, and leaving early usually costs you. Our guide to Wegovy subscription plans sets out the drawbacks.

Will I be pushed up a dose when I switch pharmacy?

No. Most pharmacies ask whether you want to step up, so the choice is generally yours. Ask to hold at your current strength and most prescribers will agree, as long as holding is clinically sensible.

Do I have to start again at 0.25 mg when I switch pharmacy on Wegovy?

No. A change of pharmacy does not reset your treatment. Show the new prescriber proof of your current dose and the date of your last injection. With no missed doses you ask to continue on the same dose or to move to the next one. The new prescriber checks your record and writes the prescription.

Can I move up a dose at the same time as I switch pharmacy?

Yes, you are free to ask. The Wegovy product information sets four weeks on each dose from 0.25 mg to 1.7 mg before the next step. Weeks completed at your old pharmacy count, so bring proof of them. The new prescriber decides after reading your record and asking about side effects.

Can I stay on the same Wegovy dose after I switch?

Yes. Staying on your current dose is the simplest request for a new prescriber to approve. The product information names 2.4 mg as the maintenance dose and lets a prescriber delay a step up when stomach side effects are significant. Tell the new pharmacy why you want to hold your dose.

Can I skip a dose step when I change pharmacy?

No. The licensed schedule goes 0.25 mg, 0.5 mg, 1 mg, 1.7 mg and 2.4 mg in order, with 7.2 mg as an optional later step for adults with obesity. A new pharmacy follows the same order. Overstating your dose to jump a step puts you at risk of severe sickness and is a false declaration to a prescriber.

I missed doses during the switch. Which dose will the new pharmacy prescribe?

One missed week follows the five day rule in the product information and normally leaves your dose unchanged. After two or more missed weeks the product information says a lower restart dose should be considered. No number of weeks or restart strength is set in the UK text, so the new prescriber decides. Give the true date of your last injection.

What proof does a new pharmacy ask for?

Expect an identity check, a photo of your most recent dispensing label showing your name, the strength and the date, and an independent check of your weight, height or BMI. The pharmacy regulator requires the weight check for weight management medicines. Many pharmacies also ask for your GP details.

When should I order from the new pharmacy?

Start when you have two weekly doses left. One pen holds four doses, so this means after your second injection from the current pen. Two weeks covers the consultation, the proof checks and a chilled delivery with time to spare.

Can I order Wegovy from two pharmacies at once?

No. Hold one prescription with one pharmacy at a time. Tell the new prescriber about any pens you still have, and cancel any repeat order or subscription with the old pharmacy once the new supply arrives.

Is switching pharmacy cheaper?

Often for the first order, because many pharmacies price a first order lower for new customers. The repeat price from the second order is the figure to compare, on the dose you will be prescribed. iGovy lists live prices for every dose with delivery included.
